A pensioner is circumnavigating Britain in an epic 3,000-mile journey using his free bus pass – and we’re proud to say he stayed in one our of homes as part of his epic journey.
Almshouse ‘Brother’ John Green, 85, is raising money and awareness for his historic almshouse accommodation, The Hospital of St Cross and Almhouse of Noble Poverty in Winchester, which is almost 900 years old.
During his extraordinary eight-week ‘Brother on a Bus’ journey, John is attempting to staying at as many other almshouses as he can and as the largest almshouse in the UK, we were only too happy to oblige.
So, on 13th May, John was a guest for the night at our Rutherford House sheltered housing scheme in Easington.
John said: “I was amazed when I was told DAMHA had over 1,800 homes which is an awful lot more than our 25 homes.
“I was made to feel very welcome by Lynsey, the Scheme Manager, and residents at Rutherford House and it was wonderful to get to know more about DAMHA’s history.”
The 25 men who live in apartments at The Hospital of St Cross are known as ‘Brothers’ and wear black or red gowns and a trencher hat for daily church and other formal occasions.
