George Alderson was one of the first people to move in to our 16-home scheme in Sherburn named in honour of a man who was dedicated to supporting the local mining community
Retired steel worker George is the Residents’ Representative at George Parkinson Court. George Parkinson was a pitman, preacher and celebrated author who played a prominent role in establishing the Miners Permanent Relief Fund that supported victims of mining accidents and their relatives.
“I was pleased one of the new bungalows became available just as I was looking,” says George. “Sherburn is a friendly village with plenty going on in the village hall and elsewhere.”
George enjoys coffee mornings and line dancing and there’s also judo, keep fit classes and various other activities on offer.
As Residents’ Representative he’s there to offer help and advice to tenants and let head office know of any issues of concern.
For newcomers he’s able to advise on the essentials – like where the electric water switch is and when the bins go out.
“In my experience DAMHA are pretty good landlords who carry out regular repair and maintenance,” says George.
“If anything gets raised you receive an email indicating when the work will be done by and nine times out of ten it happens before that date.”
