2024 marked the centenary of the opening of our Joseph Hopper Homes in Birtley.
The ten homes were completed in December 1923, but the first residents moved in the following year when they were officially opened on 16th February 1924 by George Lansbury MP.
An excerpt from a letter from John Callan, the building contractor who built the homes reads: “I wish the old people who shall live in these homes will always find their lives happy and may their last years be the happiest of all.”
