Forget Luke Littler

Forget Luke Littler

Forget Luke Littler, he has nothing on the darts players at our Bulmer House sheltered housing scheme in South Shields.

As part of the ever-increasing social scene at Bulmer House, every Wednesday our ladies and gentlemen come together in the communal lounges ready to step up to the oche.

It’s not uncommon to see over a dozen residents either playing or watching the games, which can go on for three hours, with tea breaks in between of course (you don’t see that at Ally Pally!).

The games consist of teams trying to reduce the score from 501 and the only difference between this and the game Littler, Van Gerwin et al play is that when our ladies and gents get to 40, they then only need to hit any double to win the game.

It’s become a great social occasion, in addition to the health benefits as it gets everyone exercising their arms and moving their feet as they walk to and from the board after throwing their darts.

They even have their own scorer, aka our Independent Living Officer at Bulmer House Hayley Patterson, who keeps everyone updated with the help of her trusty calculator!

It’s fantastic to see so many of the residents at Bulmer House, and from the aged miners’ bungalows, joining in activities, which also include weekly games of bingo, coffee mornings, a breakfast club and fish and chip Fridays each month.

We also have several great trips and holidays planned this year, including five days in the Isle of Wight and a day trip to Scarborough.
