Lord Foster opens new estate in Bishop Auckland
Lord Foster of Bishop Auckland, an active campaigner on social and employment issues and former local MP, opened Durham Aged Mineworkers’ Homes Association’s new St Andrew’s Estate development in Bishop Auckland on 5th September.
The completion of the St Andrew’s Estate is a welcome example of the work of progressive social partnerships at a time when the housing market is going through a very difficult period.
The £1.4 million scheme, which comprises 4 family houses and 10 older persons bungalows has been carried out in partnership with ISOS Developments and Persimmon, with part funding from a Housing Corporation Social Housing Grant.
DAMHA Chief Executive Gordon Gray said, ““This is our first new development to include family housing, and represents another fine example of Housing Associations working in partnership with house builders to provide mixed tenure communities”.
The bungalows were completed in November 2007. Built by Persimmon, the consultants engaged on the project were Lumsden Wood Partnership, Employers Agents.
The bungalows are built to Mobility standard with modern gas central heating systems and high levels of energy efficiency plus car parking and Secured by Design Accreditation from Durham Constabulary.
John and June Watson were one of the first couples to move into the development. John Watson (71) said, “We are really pleased with the bungalow ”. He added, “June and I are delighted its just right for us and has everything we need. We are very happy here”.
