Robert Olaman
17th October 1923 - 14th December 2008
It is with great regret that we inform our readers of the death of our former President, Bob Olaman, who passed away on Sunday, 14th December 2008.
Bob was a true stalwart and a veteran of public service to DAMHA and the local community serving as both a District and Parish Councillor, holding the position of Chairman of Dalton-le-Dale Parish Council for many years.
Born and bred in Murton, Bob started work at Murton Colliery at the age of 14, first on the screens and then in the joiners shop. By the time he retired he’d clocked up 47 years of colliery service.
In total, Bob has been involved with the Association for around 48 years. He was on the Murton Colliery Federation Board for 21 years and was Chairman of the Murton Colliery Mechanics Association for the same length of time. He also served as a trustee of Murton Colliery Welfare Association for 27 years which included spells as Chairman and Secretary.
Bob served as President of DAMHA from 2001 up to November 2008 and had, prior to this, been Vice President for 12 years.
When appointed in 2001 he said “It is a great privilege to be President of an organisation with such a proud heritage stretching back more than 100 years. I have held many positions during my career, but this is the greatest honour.”
Outside of his work with the Association Bob was a keen cricket fan and a member of Durham County Cricket Club.
Bob leaves a widow, Jenny.
He will be greatly missed by all associated with DAMHA.
