Domestic Hot Water Hygiene
The Association has recently received advice from the Health & Safety Executive with regard to certain showers we currently have in some of our properties.
Following a risk assessment, showers which are fed from hot water cylinders, have showed there is a low risk of bacteria forming inside the showerhead, when the showers are not used frequently.
The advice given to avoid this problem is to ensure that the showers are run for approximately 10 minutes each week. If the showerhead becomes discoloured, it should be cleaned and disinfected with a sterilising solution.
“Milton” (as used for babies bottles) is one product that has been recommended for this cleaning routine.
Carrying out this routine regularly will prevent a build up of bacteria in the shower.
If you have not already received one, an information label showing 3 simple steps to a hygienic shower will be sent to all properties very soon.
