Dispelling the myths
Part of World Mental Health Day on 10th October is to try and dispel the myths about what it is to have mental health problems.
For example, did you know 1 in 6 people experience common mental health problems at any one time? Or that depression affects 1 in 5 older people living in the community and 2 in 5 living in care homes?
Although mental health problems are common, there can still be a stigma attached.
Good mental health is seen as a positive sense of well- being and a belief in our own dignity and worth. Our mental health is influenced by our genetics, but also by our experiences as we go through life. So there are things we can all do to help our mental health, including:
- Keep physically active
- Eating well
- Drinking in moderation
- Valuing yourself and others
- Talking about your feelings
- Learning new skills
- Asking for help
There is a lot of help available to people with mental health issues and their families. For further information see www.wfmh.org
