New Banner
The new banner, paraded for the first time on Gala Day and dedicated by the Bishop of Durham (Bishop Tom) at the Cathedral Service, replaced the original banner, commissioned 25 years ago in 1983.
The new banner, made by Chippenham Designs based in Norfolk, was designed by a working group of retired miners from the Associations Executive Committee – Bob Olaman (President), Gordon Parkin (Vice President), Norman Hardy and Marshall Wylde. The design encompasses the old with the new, depicting on one side, the homes of Hopper Terrace, Birtley built in 1928, and on the other side, Elizabeth Court, High Pittington built in 2003 and named to commemorate the Queens Golden Jubilee.
Bob Olaman, the Association’s President said, “I was extremely proud to lead the new banner down to the racecourse and the dedication by the Bishop at the Miners Festival Service in the Cathedral was a great honour.
