A Memorable Gala
The 124th Durham Miners’ Gala attracted impressive numbers as usual and it continues to be revered as the one of the nation’s most significant historic social gatherings.
For DAMHA, this year’s Gala was especially significant. We paraded our new banner (see inside front cover) which was blessed in a special ceremony at Durham Cathedral alongside four other new banners. The other banners were from Handen Hold, Crookhall, Thornley and Eppleton.
In total, there were 85 banners paraded through the thronging streets of Durham on July 12 accompanied by 41 bands, including the 28-strong Ohio Brass Band.
As well as the customary marches and more formal celebrations, the Gala is also a great day out for all the family. A fantastic, colourful and festive day that goes from strength to strength. Like the banners that represent the mining communities, the Gala will continue to thrive.
“It’s remarkable after so many upheavals within the mining communities that we still continue to renew our banners for the Big Meeting. It just shows the enduring strength and depth of the mining community spirit”. Bob Olaman, DAMHA President.
