Cheers Bob!
A tot a day keeps 100 year old young
Raising his glass, 100-year- old Bob Scorer reveals the secret of a long life – a daily pint of beer. The retired miner, from the Aged Miners’ Homes in Washington, celebrated his centenary with his favourite tipple and declared: “It’s what keeps me young.”
Born in Washington, the sprightly pensioner, a former pal of Sunderland-born stand-up comic Bobby Thompson, is a popular figure in the town where he has lived all his life. The amateur singer has more than 15 grandchildren and great grandchildren.
His wife Sally sadly passed away aged 86. One of his daughters, Sylvia Greener, said: “He makes a point of having a pint or two every day and he likes a splash of rum in his coffee. He says that’s why he’s lived so long.” Despite suffering serious head injuries in a mining accident and being registered blind, Bob still insists on living in his own home. “He does enjoy his independence,” said Sylvia. “He’s always been the same. He has had a few health problems over the years. He suffered a fractured skull in a mining accident and he has had cataracts but he still lives his own life. He has a carer who checks on him every day.”
Family and friends gathered at the Springwell Village Working Men’s Club to mark the milestone. Sylvia, who organised the party with sister Jean Johnson, 72, added: “He’s lived in the area all his life so a lot of people know him. He’d do a bit of singing while Bobby told a few jokes. Everybody had a great time.”
