99 year-old on the move
99 year-old Mrs Mabel Haswell, born and bred in Gateshead, has moved from her two-bedroom house in Gateshead to a Durham Aged Mineworkers’ Homes Association bungalow in Nettlesworth.
Mabel enjoys her independence and continues to do housework, cooking, baking and ironing and she was initially reluctant to move home until she saw the bungalows at Gair Court, Nettlesworth, near her daughter’s home at Plawsworth. She thought the bungalows were “lovely and just where I wanted to live”. Her daughter Mabel Smith (72 years old) who had to make a 20 mile round trip every day to her Mother’s house in Gateshead is thrilled to have her mother living nearby. She said “ I can see her light from my kitchen and can pop round to see her anytime”.
Mrs Haswell said “My memories of my time living in Gateshead will always have a special place in my heart but the time came for me to move into a bungalow and be nearer to my daughter and family. Whilst I will miss all of my lovely friends and neighbours, life is easier for me in my new surroundings”.
Mabel completed the move a few weeks ago, said “ I really enjoy living here already. I am relieved that the move is over but I have always believed that when you want to do something you just have to put your mind to it. And it was worth it”.
It comes as no surprise that Mabel, who likes reading, trips, parties, shopping has already made new friends with her neighbours.
