Local Fundraiser Opens New Bungalows at Stanley

Joe Watson, a local Stanley man who was awarded the MBE for his many years of charitable work, opened DAMHA’s latest development of bungalows at Stanley, County Durham at a ceremony on Wednesday 30 August.

Born in Stanley in 1926, Mr Wilson has been involved with a number of local charities including fundraising for the Hospice Movement and home care for the sick.

The million pound scheme at Coniston Court, Westfields and Ullswater Court, Eastfields consists of 11 two-bedroom bungalows. It was developed in partnership with Derwentside Council and Nomad Homes with part funding from the Housing Corporation and has regenerated land previously occupied by old council flats and garages.

This is DAMHA’s second new development in Derwentside following the completion of 25 bungalows in Consett town centre in 2001 and is part of DAMHA’s continuous drive to provide affordable homes that meet the 21st century needs and expectations of mature residents. There is a high demand for this style and quality of elderly-friendly bungalow. Bob Olaman, Damha’s President said, “We aim to build modern, efficient bungalows that address the accommodation needs of older people within established communities and with appropriate facilities. We must be getting it right because the demand is so great. At Consett we have 160 on the waiting list and here in Stanley there are 67”.

Coniston Court resident Mrs Norma Dodds, said “Moving into my new home has made a big difference for me. I need wheelchair access and I can easily get in and out to chat with my neighbours and enjoy the lovely views from my garden.”
