New Bungalows for Leam Lane, Gateshead

Durham Aged Mineworkers’ Homes Association opened a new £750,000 bungalow development at Basildon Court, Sheraton, Leam Lane, Gateshead on Thursday 2nd October.

The scheme, consisting of 8 two-bedroom bungalows built on a site acquired from Gateshead Council, is the latest phase of DAMHA’s continuous drive to provide affordable homes that meet the 21st century needs and expectations of mature and less able residents.

The Association has an established reputation for building modern bungalows that address the accommodation needs of older and less able people. All of the energy efficient homes are built to mobility standards, have access to community alarm facilities, are ‘Secure By Design’ and accredited by Northumbria Police.

At the opening ceremony, which was performed by Councillor Maureen Goldsworthy, Mayor of Gateshead, DAMHA’s President Bob Olaman, said, “This is the second opening in Gateshead in the space of a few months. In April, we had the opening ceremony for eight new homes in Wrekenton about a mile up the road, and here we are today with another eight at Leam Lane. We believe that through our development partnership with NomadE5 we are providing a much-nedded style and quality of housing and we hope that we will can look forward to further development opportunities in Gateshead and throughout the rest of the region.”

New resident Louise Hook, (36), who moved into Basildon Court from a nearby one-bedroom flat said, “Its great. The house exceeded my expectations. I use a wheelchair and the facilities are just right – I have a drive for my car right outside of my door, wheelchair access is easy and I can adjust the height of my hob and sink in the kitchen to suit me or my visitors”.

DAMHA Director John Humble, said “We are delighted that Louise is happy with her new home. We often design our new homes to suit the specific needs of individuals when asked to in consultation with our partners. In this case, Gateshead Council wanted to provide Louise with a two-bedroom house where she could remain near to her parents”.

The development was carried out in Partnership with Gateshead Council and NomadE5, Durham Aged Mineworkers’ Homes Association’s development partners and was partly funded by Social Housing Grant from the Housing Corporation.

John Carleton, The Housing Corporation’s Field Director for the North, said "By working in partnership with DAMHA and Gateshead Council the Housing Corporation has enabled the development of the new bungalows at Basildon Court. Our investment has made possible the delivery of these much needed new homes that are fit for the 21st century."

Able Construction of Felling built the bungalows and the consultants employed on the project were Lumsden Wood Partnership of Chester-le-Street (Employers Agent), Anthony Watson of Sunderland (Architects), W.S.P. of Newcastle (Structural Engineers) and Waring and Netts of Newcastle (Health & Safety Planning Supervisors).
