Blooming Marvellous

Judging the winners of the annual DAMHA pot plant competition is never easy – and this year was no exception.

Whilst the number of people who submitted entries for this year’s competition was down on previous years, the standard was still very high and judges Gordon Gray (DAMHA Chief Executive), Gordon Parkin (DAMHA President) and Norman Hardy (DAMHA Vice-President) had a hard job awarding the prizes for 1st, 2nd and 3rd.

After a visit to the homes of each of the three short-listed winners, and much deliberation, the prizes were allocated as follows:

1st prize (£50) – Jeff and Carole Embleton, of St Chads, Thornley.

2nd prize (£10) – Eleanor Nottingham, Ryehill Gardens, Hartlepool.

3rd prize (£10) – Jack Rudd, High Jobs Hill, Crook.

DAMHA Chief Executive Gordon Gray said: “The standard of entries this year was very good and with little rain in the spring and early summer, it was obvious that people had put in a lot of hard work to ensure their gardens bloomed at the right time.

“The competition encourages residents to take pride in where they live and based on the gardens and displays we saw, this certainly is evident in many of our homes and communities.”

In order to encourage more entries in 2010, DAMHA is increasing the prize money to £100 for 1st place, £50 or 2nd place and £20 for 3rd place.
