Marjory - Still Dancing at 81
"I am not ready to be an old lady yet", said Marjory Perry, (81). Marjory started her dancing career late but once she starts something, she sticks to it. When her niece decided to enroll at the Time Steps Theatre Dance School, Marjory said that she would go along too. Marjory was 76 and she still trains at the school five years later!
Marjory plays her part in the dance company’s regular performances. The most notable being their show at the Sunderland Empire Theatre in June of this year, which was given in aid of the George Elmy Lifeboat Restoration Fund. The fund is being used to restore the Seaham Lifeboat that was washed up after the disaster of 17 November 1962 when the crew were lost on a rescue mission.
Marjory was born in Seaham but lived in the Midlands with her late husband Norman for 49 years. Norman was from the Midlands and had a successful business career their as a company director. However, Marjory never forgot Seaham and eventually returned to her beloved home town.
She worked as a Infant School teacher for 14 years, (graduating at 40) and still misses the children, but she still keeps busy and loves the time spent with her family; Alison her daughter, her grandson Ben and her two great grandchildren.
And, she still finds time to attend dance school every Wednesday.
