Hartlepool Reading Room Opening

A popular reading room annexe has been refurbished through a partnership initiative.

The official re-opening of the refurbished Reading Room, which is in the middle of the 24 properties in Ryehill Gardens, Hartlepool, marks the completion of several years of work at the homes.

The Hartlepool's War Memorial Homes and The Crosby Homes complex has 24 two-bedroomed bungalows.

Built in the 1920s, the homes have provided accommodation to older people for the past 90 years.

Since 2000, Durham Aged Mineworkers' Homes Association has provided management support to the trustees, and there have been a series of refurbishment projects including re-roofing, kitchen and bathroom renewals, boiler replacements, and new footpaths and roadways.

The most recent project, completed by Sunter and Burns Architects has seen the refurbishment of the residents' reading room.

The facility is provided for use by residents for coffee mornings and fellowship meetings.

Mike Moy, chairman of trustees of Hartlepool's War Memorial Homes and The Crosby Homes, said: "Myself and fellow trustees are sure that the modern, bright facility will be well used by residents and members of the local community."

John Humble, regional representative for the National Almshouse Association, who carried out the official opening ceremony, praised the trustees for actively involving residents in the refurbishment process.
