Obituaries
It is with great sadness that we report on the passing of two stalwarts of the association.
Elizabeth “Betty” Hewitson
Elizabeth “Betty” Hewitson died in February after a period of illness.
Betty was the Residents Representative for John Wilson Court, Horden and first joined the Housing and Development Sub Committee in September 2000 later joining the Executive Committee in October 2005. Throughout her life, Betty always worked to help people, having served in four hospitals and also working as a Warden for older people. She also served as a Parish Councillor and was a governor of two schools.
Gordon Gray said “ Betty had the mining industry in her veins and provided a residents voice on the Executive Committee. She will be greatly missed by all”.
Albert Nugent
Albert Nugent, former leader of Durham County Council died on Good Friday after a long illness. Albert served on the Executive Committee from 1989, but because of his council commitments resigned in 2000, but kept his involvement as one of three advisors. Albert was a Dawdon and Seaham miner who will be best remembered for his passionate campaign to keep open council run care homes earmarked for closure, a fight which his widow, Margaret has vowed to continue.
Having spent his working life in the mining industry, it is fitting that Albert was buried with his miners lamp.
