Care is just a phone call away
Patients in County Durham who need urgent, but not emergency, care are being asked to ring a new phone number.
From now, patients must phone 0300 111 0111 and they will be put through to the service they need.
The phone line is not for emergencies, if someone has a serious illness or injury, people should still dial 999 and ask for an ambulance.
Leaflets and posters will be distributed publicising the number and a guide to available services will be delivered to homes soon.
Services are provided from six urgent care centres staffed by GPs and qualified staff skilled in emergency care. Patients can walk in without an appointment, but are advised to call 0300 111 0111 first.
The centres are in Bishop Auckland Hospital, Shotley Bridge Community Hospital, University Hospital of North Durham in Durham City, Seaham Medical Centre and Peterlee Community Hospital.
Patients can also call NHS Direct on 0845 46 47 for help.
