Rutherford House is 21!
Rutherford House Sheltered Housing Scheme celebrated its 21st birthday on Thursday 19 November with a party for residents, staff, friends and families.
Built by the Association in 1988 on wasteland at Seaside Lane, Easington to fulfill the need for sheltered housing in the area, Rutherford House is home to 38 residents. As part of the development, DAMHA also built 10 leasehold bungalows where residents share the communal facilities provided by Rutherford House.
House Manager Barbara Smith remembers when Rutherford House was being built. She said, “I worked at a Care Home nearby and I was really excited when they started to build Rutherford House. I was single at the time and my fiancé and I used to follow the progress of the building work every day. I really wanted to be the warden at Rutherford House”. When the first warden left after just eleven months, newly married Barbara was thrilled to be given the job of residential warden. “It was a dream come true”, said Barbara and she has been there now for over 20 years!
Barbara said, “ I have seen lots of changes during my time at Rutherford House. My husband and I brought up our two sons here. We have met some wonderful people here and have some very happy memories”.
