New Homes in Sherburn Village
The official opening of our latest development of bungalows at Meadow Edge, Sherburn, was performed by Simon Henig, the leader of the new unitary Durham County Council, on Tuesday, 21st July.
The £2.2 million development on the edge of the village consists of 21 two bedroom bungalows, of which 18 are for rent and 3 sold on a shared ownership basis.
The Association’s Chief Executive, Gordon Gray said, "We have a proud history of providing high quality homes for the older people and this latest development underlines our commitment to addressing the acute housing needs in our former mining communities".
The homes were developed in partnership with ISOS Developments and the former Durham City Council, Mr Gray added that the support of the local council members and staff from the City Council was very instrumental in the project’s success.
The homes were designed by Burns Architects of Castle Eden and built by Able Construction of Gateshead with Lumsdon Wood Partnership of Chester-le-Street engaged as Employer’s Agent. The overall cost was assisted by a grant from the Homes and Communities Agency.
Resident George Alderson, (60), said, "My bungalow is perfect. The layout is great. My neighbours are really nice. Access is good and the views from this location on the outskirts of the village are simply beautiful". George planned his retirement in great detail, including joining the local bowling club before he moved from Bowburn to his new bungalow in Sherburn. His preparation seems to have paid off. Not only has he got what he describes as his 'perfect retirement home', but he also won the CIU bowling cup in 2008. George’s other interests include genealogy. He said, "Living here in Sherburn means I can easily drive into the Dales to visit sites of interest to help me to trace my family roots there".
