The 2006 Pot Plant Competition Winners

This summer’s annual Pot Plant competition, which took place during a red-hot July, had a record crop of entries.

John Humble, Director, said “Gardens play an important part in making our homes attractive and provide enjoyment and a flourish of colour to our neighbourhoods. The entrants have obviously dedicated a lot of time and hard work to design and nurture their gardens, which no doubt will be an inspiration to other residents. The outstanding variety and inventiveness of entries this year was very striking and the garden layouts as well as the health and abundance of the planting was really impressive”.

The first prize of £50 worth of gardening vouchers was awarded to Jack and Doris Shanks for their exceptionally vibrant and stylish display at their bungalow in Carrside, Framwellgate Moor. Jack and Doris are no strangers to winning having won the competition previously in both 2003 and 2004

The judges described second Prizewinners Peter and Marjory Talbot’s garden at Chopwell as “an inspired and original design with an inventive use of space”.

Third prizewinners Ralph and Doris Barkham created what one judge described as “an eye-catching display that cleverly manages to give a cottage style feel to an open plan area”.

The high standard of entries this year meant that two other exceptional entries were given “Highly Commended” awards:

  • (1) Jack Rudd’s stunning early summer flowers at High Jobs Hill, Crook and
  • (2) Alan and Winnie Pallister’s delightful planting at their Easington bungalow
