Safe Driving with Age

SAGE words for older drivers

Older drivers are receiving extra training to help them feel more confident on the County’s roads.

Safer Driving with age (SAGE) has just been launched following a review of the Council's National Driver Improvement Scheme.

The Council's Road safety manager Alan Kennedy said: "We found that a sizeable number of drivers referred to the programme by the police were aged over 70 and some were aged over 80."

"Many older drivers have not had further driving tuition and some never had to take a driving test. There was a general feeling that they would benefit from the opportunity to hone their skills."

Drivers can either refer themselves to the scheme or be referred by a doctor or the police. Those taking part will have a medical assessment and an 'In Car Driving Assessment' on familiar rods.

Once the assessment has been successfully completed, the driver will receive a certificate.
