Blues for Disabled Drivers
Your Guide To Qualifying For The Blue Badge Scheme
The Blue Badge Scheme entitles you to free parking if you have severe walking difficulties and need to travel as either a driver or passenger.
It also applies if you are registered blind or have a severe upper limb disability and cannot turn a steering wheel by hand.
A blue badge can be automatically issued if you can supply written proof that you:
- Receive Mobility Allowance only (not Attendance Allowance)
- Receive higher rate of the mobility component (i.e. help with getting around) of Disability Living Allowance
- Receive War Pensioners Mobility Supplement
- Use a motor vehicle supplied by the Department of Social Security
- Are registered blind (and have someone drive for you)
- Have a severe disability in both upper limbs and are unable to turn, by hand, the steering wheel of a vehicle, even if it is fitted with a turning knob.
It can also be issued if you have a permanent and substantial disability that affects your ability to walk less than 100 metres, but you would need to apply. Your doctor will be contacted to confirm your situation. This does not include temporary problems, such as a broken leg.
